Guinea Matoto Community School – Initiative Update (May 2026)
As we move into late May, our community in Kobian is preparing for Tabaski, one of the most important celebrations of the year in Guinea, bringing a period of prayer, family gatherings, and generosity, when many families share meals and support those in need.
This festive season is always meaningful for our school community. For many families, it is also a time of financial pressure, as they work to provide for celebrations. As always, we remain grateful for the commitment of our teachers and families, who prioritize learning even during busy cultural and agricultural periods.
At the national level, Guinea is entering a significant moment. The country is preparing for elections at the end of May.
Against this backdrop, the impact of the Bountouraby Sylla Community School remains clear. With over 450 students supported each year, the school continues to be a vital center for learning in a rural region where access to education remains limited and literacy rates are still low. Our students continue to play an important role in their families, often helping with reading, writing, and translation, demonstrating how education has ripple effects throughout the entire community.
We were also excited to hear about our field lead, Badara’s, brother Bobzi’s recent time back in Guinea, reconnecting with family, culture, and the broader community. Visits like this strengthen ties between Kobian and our international network, reinforcing the cultural exchange and shared purpose that underpin our initiative.
As we head into the rainy season and the final stretch of the school year, we remain focused on supporting our teachers, maintaining school operations, and ensuring students are well prepared for their exams and next steps.
Thank you, as always, for being part of this journey with us. Your support continues to make education accessible, meaningful, and transformative for the children of Kobian.
