La Cruz is a very poor community adjacent to the town of San Lucas Toliman in Solala Guatemala. The women’s centre was the dream of a small group of Mayan women ten years ago and today it is a thriving centre serving the poorest families in the area. The goals of this initiative are to provide resources to sustain the basic needs of family life in impoverished situations by providing stoves, latrines, washing stations, and community water tanks through the generosity of donors and to develop income generating opportunities for the women of La Cruz.
The La Cruz centre allows women to access literacy education, discuss health concerns, facilitate educational courses and initiate sustainable projects. Some of the on-site resources available include sewing machines, a meeting and activity area, kitchen, and chicken coops. These resources have enabled the women to receive several sustainable contracts for the hand-crafted items that they learned to make at the women’s centre as well as various employment opportunities in the village, providing income and community for the women of La Cruz.
This initiative successfully addresses the need for community engagement, education, and dependable food. Strong leadership has emerged from the center through their passion to meet the needs of the community. The dedicated leaders work on a volunteer basis.
