At our last meeting with Candelaria, we received some sad news. San Antonio Palopó is facing food insecurity due to drought. They haven’t had rain in over 2 months although it seems the rains have started at the end of September. This year’s corn and bean crops have failed, water wells are drying up and transportation costs have drastically increased.
Families in San Antonio Palopό have lost most of their corn crops. They will now have to buy expensive corn imported from Mexico. Many women make corn tortillas to sell for a meagre income and that’s no longer possible. This means that the already-poor folk of San Antonio Palopó will have to struggle even more just to survive. And it means that the Casita’s costs will rise, especially the lunches for the Ancianas and the snacks for the children. We’ll work hard to meet this challenge, and are so grateful for you, our donors, and your support.

The Ancianas come twice a week for lunches and some social time.

Water wells are beginning to dry up and families are having to buy water.
La Casita continues to be a hub of activity everyday of the week and especially on Saturdays with computer and sewing classes! As part of their responsibility of receiving a scholarship, the scholarship students help Alma and Lydia and Magda with the younger children’s tutorial classes especially in Reading and Math. The younger ones also need help learning Spanish since Kaqchikel is often the language spoken at home.
